Reference sources

These online sources may be useful in finding background information on your topic, and in checking facts as you write your paper.  For printed encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference books, check OskiCat or ask the librarians for help.

  • Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism
    The Guide presents a comprehensive historical survey of literary theory and criticism, providing entries on critical schools and movements, critics and theorists, and terms, along with references and bibliographies for further research.
  • New Catholic Encyclopedia
    Online version of the 15 volume, 2nd edition (2003). Features 12,000 entries on theology, philosophy, history, literary figures, saints, musicians and much more.
  • Oxford Reference Online - Literature
    Includes 18 reference sources published by Oxford University Press on the topic of literature.
  • Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
    The accepted authority on the evolution of the English language. Entries contain detailed etymological analyses that trace word development through time and are illustrated by quotations from a wide range of English-language sources.
