About the Catalog:
The collection consists of approximately 12,000 photographs and 35mm slides taken or collected by Robert L. Wiegel.
Most of the photographs were taken by him in 55 countries (and all
coastal states of the USA) he visited professionally in his 57 years of
teaching, research, and practice. Also included are slides given to him
by Joe W. Johnson, William J. Herron, Jr., Orville T. Magoon, the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, and others. There are photographs of beaches,
waves (unbroken), breakers (surf, swash runup and drawdown), rip
currents, river mouths, accretion and erosion, structures (piers,
groins, breakwaters, seawalls, revetments, outfalls), construction,
beach nourishment (fill), and more.
The catalog was originally created by
Wiegel, utilizing the Papyrus Bibliography System. The records have
since been imported and updated in other formats. The fields include:
author(s), year, title (including location and date), comments, and
keywords. Country, State, and County have been added when applicable.
About Robert L. Wiegel:
Robert L. Wiegel is professor emeritus, Department of Civil &
Environmental Engineering, University of California, Berkeley. He was
Chairman of the Coastal Engineering Research Council (ASCE), President
of the International Engineering Committee on Oceanic Resources
(advisor to UNESCO), and editor of Shore & Beach (ASBPA). He is a
member of the National Academy of Engineering, Honorary Member and
Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Fellow of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has written and
edited several books, and is the author of more than 155 papers and 100
technical reports.
