The Muir Heritage
Land Trust, in partnership with Contra Costa County Public Works
and the East Bay Regional Park District, acquired the 122 acre Pacheco
Marsh to be preserved as open space. The marsh, at the mouth of
the Walnut Creek channel along Carquinez Strait in Martinez, has
been degraded and filled, which has eliminated tidal innundation.
The San Francisco
Bay Fund has granted funding for the Restoration Plan, which is
now in draft form, and we are currently seeking funding for the
actual restoration. The restoration project will maximize habitat
and improve the ecological values of the site. We plan to enhance
the quality and quantity of habitat for 12 special status plant
and animal species. The restored property will include a staging
area for public access, environmental education and trail connnections
to other parks.
