The Wetlands
Tracker Project provides public access to scientific and practical
management information about past and proposed wetland restoration,
enhancement, creation, and mitigation projects within the historical
extent of the tides in San Pablo Bay, Central Bay and South Bay
of the San Francisco Estuary. The project goals are:
(1) create
an accurate database of existing information about the locations,
sizes, main habitats, sponsors, schedules, and contact people
for all projects;
(2) create a website that allows public access to the wetland
project information via project lists and interactive maps;
(3) create capability for anyone to upload and share information
about any project; and
(4) produce a process to maintain the information database and
regional maps of projects through the permitting process of state
and federal regulatory agencies.
A San Francisco
Bay Area map and database of past and proposed wetland projects
is a basic requirement for the analysis of site-specific and cumulative
effects of the projects on ecological and economic factors of the
region. Without such fundamental information, we cannot assess the
value of wetland restoration efforts or prioritize projects, we
cannot say what is the net change in amount of wetland habitat locally
or overall, and we do not know the locations of restoration projects
of different age that when looked at together would allow us to
estimate the rate of recovery of wetlands or their functions. What
is needed is a basic map in digital format that shows the boundaries
of all wetland projects in the region, annotated with basic information
about each project.
The Wetland
Tracker is being developed by the San Francisco Estuary Institute
to meet this need. Initial development was funded by the San Francisco
Foundation. Additional funding has been provided by the USEPA (
The United States Environmental Protection Agency), the San Francisco
Estuary Project, and the San Francisco Bay Program of the USFWS
(United States Fish and Wildlife Service).
The Wetland
Tracker exists at www.wetlandtracker.org.
