RE: Christian videos

My problem is from staff members who insist I buy videos of their favorite
preacher. I have found OCLC printouts on my desk many a time showing me
that "other libraries" buy them. We buy a lot of religious material but it
is usually of a general or historic nature. I draw the line at buying
someone's sermons. We would buy things such as a biographies of a famous
preachers (e.g. Billy Graham), but we will not buy a video of them preaching.

Before I took over this job, we had next to nothing dealing with the
non-Christian religions -- one of my pet peeves. Now we've got a pretty
good selection of Judaic materials and are continuing to fill in our weaker
areas such as Islam and Buddahism.

Another problem is a staff member who insists that we buy religious
teleplays so she "doesn't have to read the Bible." Arrgghhh!

I would also like to add that we are located in the same city as Jimmy
Swaggart Ministries. Surprisingly, we never receive solicitations from
them to buy their materials, and they don't attempt to give us freebies.
My assistant informs me that we've tried to buy some of his musical
recordings in the past but were not able to get them through our regular
purchasing channels. We would like to have them since he's a Louisiana
boy. Maybe we'll try again...
