How exciting that someone is still offering Media Librarianship. =20

A. What if you had the class complete a project that asked them to =
correlate an existing media collection to the national Learning =
Standards. They could start with the McRel website =
http://www.mcrel.org/standards-benchmarks/?

B. Also, as part of a SUNY graduate course, I asked them to discuss the =
idea of "value added" in terms of the potential of media collections to =
actually improve learning and address learning styles.

C. What about them participating in the PBS National Teacher Training =
Institute. They do a great job of teaching quality integration of media =
into the curriculum.

Obviously these elements are primarily for those interested in school or =
academic libraries, however, I have heard public librarians comment on =
how valuable the discussion was.

D. For all types of libraries, ask them to put together a regional =
coordinated collection development policy for nonprint. It should cover =
format, a definition of age appropriate, preview and evaluation =
criteria, etc. etc. etc.

E. Be sure to have a group investigate HDTV, DVX, video streaming, etc =
and explain it to the rest of the class in the context of their role in =
the library of the 21st century.

F. Be sure to get a copy of ARL's teleconference being broadcast in =
May, Copyright in the New Millenium.

G. Distance Learning & its history from microwave to satellite to =
current Net & Road Runner type access.

H. Compare T1, T3, OC3, ATM and other levels of infrastructure to =
support a given demographic area as though you were designing for a =
campus-wide, community or regional school district network with the =
bandwidth to actually support the projected traffic.

J. Finally, I loved Daniel's idea of reviewing two films of similar =
subject matter but stylistically different presentations. It would =
truly give them a sense that the problem for many media libraries is =
choosing among three very good films - now which best meets the needs of =
the audience and the budget - and how do you as the media librarian =
balance the exigencies of the conflicting voices that require your =
services.
