As I said in my first message, I haven't yet seen the "Xala" video. I just
called our head cataloger and asked that she expedite the processing of our
new video so I can see it myself. The preliminary entry that appears in our
library's online catalog leaves some doubts in my mind. Here's what our
catalog says:

TITLE: Xala [videorecording] = The Curse / ecrit et realise par
Sembene Ousmane ; directeur de production, Paulin Soumanou
PUBLISHER: Connoisseur Video, c1995.
DESCRIPTION: 1 videocassette (119 min.) : sd., col. ; 1/2 in.
NOTE: In French with English subtitles.
NOTE: Based on Sembene's novel, Xala.
NOTE: Originally produced as a motion picture by Film Domireew and
Societe nationale cinematographique in 1974.

I'm curious just what company name appears on the packaging, and whether it
is indeed in PAL. If this is the British tape that Jessica refers to, it's
legal for classroom showings in the US, isn't it? Yes, I know the 16mm film
is distributed by New Yorker Films. In fact, I've rented it from them.
