I agree Leslie. Clearly, from this discussion there are many
differing interpretations of the Copyright Law ranging from
liberal to conservative. There are big differences in the
application of the law between academic and public libraries. I
see our conversations as a way to share these interpretations
and try to understand their rationale. I, personally, get an
opportunity to where this institution's interpretation falls
within the range. Let's continue to share interpretations as
enlightening and not as attempts to condemn.

I'm sorry Philip, I don't agree. These are just the very topics we need to
be discussing on this list and the particulars are important. I appreciate
reading all responses (civil or not) to such an important issue.

Perhaps we tend to quash discussions when they become too emotional
and therefore uncomfortable, however, that is often when the most
pertinent issues come to fore. Remember, the delete key is always there
for anyone to use. Let discussions take their natural course. When
there is nothing more to discuss, the conversation will be over. Until
then, let all sides continue!
