Good advice for any video library: check all tapes before you put them on
the shelf to be sure the record tab has been removed. We have received
tapes from distributors with the tab still in, and accidental erasures can
happen. That doesn't address your problems of theft/malicious erasing, but
it's a start.

We are not a public library and so can keep closer tabs on who last used a
tape; if we find a wrong tape in a box, we can call the faculty and sort
out the problem. Would you have a way to note on a user's record that the
return transaction is not completed until the tape has been checked - and
bill the user at that time if it has been erased or damaged?
