For those of you who haven't seen it yet, check out the "Internet
Librarian" column in the April issue of _American Libraries_ (p. 94). It
features Gary Handman's Online Audio Recording Project at UC Berkeley. In
addition to Gary's work digitizing audio, the article highlights the work
of Gary's cataloger, Mary Louise Smith. I intend to take a copy of this
article to our Director of Technical Services, who is scrutinizing every
cataloging area as a candidate for outsourcing. For anyone who thinks
media librarianship is a "backwater" -- as one colleague was recently told
by a library administrator -- this article is must-reading. Of course,
it's must-reading for the rest of us who like to hear that once again,
"librarians made it happen."
