He's an excellent speaker. I heard him at a FIAF film preservation panel
which included Scorsese, Lucas, Spielbeg and Clint Eastwood. He is
articulate and has a good sense of humour. Finally, his experience in the
film industry is vast and his path has crossed that of many great filmmakers
including John Ford and Orson Welles. If you could watch his DIRECTED BY
JOHN FORD (1971) you'll see the difficulty he had interviewing John Ford on
camera and how he succeded in revealing the genious of a quirky individual.
I'm also assuming that he is a very well-read individual because a chunk of
his personal library was sold last year and the list was quite long. I
haven't read his latest book yet (waiting for it to be remaindered) but the
reviews were quite good.
