Here's a graphic example of pan and scan vs. letterbox. I have a friend who is
a fan of one of the dancers in the movie of "West Side Story". In the pan and
scan version she owns she gets to watch his dancing on the left side of the
screen. In the pan and scan version owned by the local public library she
gets to watch his dancing on the right side of the screen. (She was very
excited about all the numbers she hadn't seen him in before.) Obviously she's
going to buy herself the letterbox version so she gets to see both sides of the
screen (i.e. the whole movie)!
