RE: 16mm purchase sources?

We buy most of our 16mm films from Festival Films. What they offer changes
periodically, but they do seem to supply prints struck from good negatives.
Whenever a good print is not possible, the owner, Ron Hall, always tells
us what the problems are, so we can decide if we really want it. He has a
lot of public domain titles, so things like Potemkin are always available.
He also sells prints from private collectors, so, as a public library, we
don't buy these, since the rights issue can be muddy. I don't know how the
doctrine of first sale, combined with educational use changes the mix in
this area. Anyway, the address is:
Festival Films
6115 Chestnut Terrace
Shorewood, MN 55331
FAX 612 470-2172

As for the newer titles, leasing is probably your only option. It has
gotten expensive, so we only do it if we think a title will be used many
times by our branches during the term of the lease. Otherwise, rental is
cheaper.
Hope this helps.
