It's my understanding (which I believe is correct) that the First Sale
Doctrine of the copyright law allows resale, rental, or other disposition
of legally-acquired copyrighted materials. I suppose that if a
distributor establishes license and/or sale conditions (i.e. a contract)
which prohibits first sale rights, the contract may take precedent. It'd
be pretty stupid to attempt, however (in my book). Let's face it,
libraries have been loaning and borrowing (book) materials forever; that
this issue is coming up now with video only shows how relatively rare
video ILL has been up till now...
