We check out videos for 3 days to students, and 7 days to faculty.
Initially, we did it because we were hoping to reduce the demand and wear
and tear on the viewing carrel equipment. It has really helped a lot.
Sure, we lose a video to a bad vcr now and then, but its outweighed in
equipment savings. We instituted a reserve video collection for high-use
and contractually restricted items.

So far so good.

We were also hoping to "mainstream" the video collection. The more routine
it is to use videos as part fo the regular library materials set, the less
likely we are to be unfairly cut when economic hard times befall us again.
