Lorna:

Gary already mentioned "Night of the Living Dead" which would be a good
choice for you. If you stretch sci-fi into horror films you might
consider the old vampire films:"Blackula" and it's sequel "Scream,
Blackula, Scream." They were moderately popular in their time, but
would be very dated now I'd guess.

What about some of the "Star Trek" television series episodes such
as the original Star Trek episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"
which was a very blatant comment on racism in the 60's. The Next
Generation series did a episode about the character "Data" and
whether or not he 'belonged' to the Federation; I believe the episode
was titled "The Measure of a Man."

There have been a number of sci-fi movies in the past few years with
black characters in lead roles but I'm not sure if they fit your criteria
of Black themes. Some titles would be: "Virtuosity" with Denzel
Washington, "Independence Day" with Will Smith and even "The Nutty
Professor" with Eddie Murphy.

Just a few ideas to toss around. I'd like to see you final list too.
