Hi Carol!

I select videos for the Popular Reading Library division in the Central
Branch of the the Vancouver Public Library.

The division's original mandate had been to purchase videos that were filmed
versions of classic books. Therefore, items such as _The Prisoner of
Zenda_, _The Good Earth_ etc. were purchased.

We now have evolved a selection policy that differs slightly
from the standard VPL policy. We buy if it falls under the criteria
of "the film was originally a book" and/or "it may or may not be easily
available in video stores". As an example, I have just purchased
_Buffalo Jump_ which is the film version of Canadian writer Susan Haley's
novel _Getting Married in Buffalo Jump_. This film is periodically
broadcast on the CBC, is quite well done, but is not easily available
at the local store.

I also tend to focus more on series that are shown on public television
channels or on A&E, such as _The Buccaneers_, _Brides of Christ_,
_Sherlock Holmes_.

We do not buy current theatrical releases. However, if they come to us
as a "gift", we make a decision on an individual basis. Most often the
item ends up at the semi-annual booksale.

As to circulation etc., Jane Devine has already covered that in her
response to you.

If you need any further information, I may be contacted via e-mail at the
address below.
