Dear Gary,
It definitely sounds like Jean-Pierre Gorin's Poto and Cabengo, a 1979
documentary distributed by New Yorker which matches your description to a tee
except the girls are white. Gorin teaches, by the way, at UCSD in the Visual
Arts Department.
