Re: Questionable copyright advice

I agree with Ralph that this is a troubling situation. I have that
journal at work and will take a look at the article. The AECT Copyright
Committee sponsors the "Copyright and You" column and the advice
contained in it is usually sound. Therefore, it is troubling that it now
contains erroneous information and bad advice about the use of a rented
video in a classroom setting.

I also agree with Gary that Rick Provine, as Chair of VRT, should write a
letter to TechTrends. I will also contact Janis Bruwelheide, author of _The
Copyright Primer_. She spoke at the recent AECT Conference in
Indianapolis and she has been a member of the AECT Copyright Committee in
the past. She may be able to influence TechTrends to correct the article
or at least publish a letter from Rick, hopefully with an editorial note
acknowledging the bad advice. Maybe she will also write confirming
that the information is wrong. However, I'm sure some damage has been
done. What do you want to bet that we see that column quoted in some
future copyright article or book, or at the very least cited on one of
the media-related listservs?
