Media Mall E-Letter

Hi folks. I debated about whether to put the appended out on the list (it's
long, it pushed the video envelope, blah blah blah), and finally decided that
it's probably a good thing for us to adopt The Merry Prankster motto--
FURTHER--when thinking about things video-ish. So here goes

Regards!

Friends,
We are resending the March E-Letter because apparently some people on our
list did not receive it with our first distribution.
If you have received it twice, our humblest apologies.
If you have a moment to let us know whether you received it once or twice
that would be appreciated.
Thanks for understanding that "It's always more complicated than you think
it is" ...especially on the digital frontier.
Jon Leland (jleland@sirius.com)

1. HOT WEB SPOTS
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:

THE WEB SECEDES FROM THE UNION...
Many of you are aware of the new US Telecommunications Reform Act whose
'decency' clauses are an affront to our right to free speech. Why did the
U.S. Congress pass this bill and why did President Clinton sign this bill
when everyone involved knew that it was unconstitutional? It's worth
thinking about. One reaction we found worth reading was Grateful Dead
lyricist and Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder, John Perry
Barlow's, "Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace." It's positively
provocative and draws a proverbial "line in the cyber-sand." You'll find
it at:

http://www.mediamall.com/mmall/now/Independence.html

or even easier, for a text-only version, send e-mail to:

info@mediamall.com

and our auto-responder will zap you an electronic copy.

VDOLive: WEB-CASTING IS HERE NOW!
Multimedia on the web has just made another leap. We're affectionately
calling this new trend: Web-casting. It means broadcasting digital video on
the Internet. Thank's to a company called VDONet and their new Netscape
plug-in player and their server software, the Web now has the sights and
sounds of real-time movies (no downloading). Of course, these are small and
low-res movies like the first QuickTime videos, but you can bet the family
jewels that this fore-shadows bigger pictures that are just around the
corner.

Jon's Leland's latest Videography magazine article provides an overview of
this new technology and puts it in context. Check it out at:

http://www.mediamall.com/mmall/pro/vdolive.html

Also, you can also visit VDO's site at:

http://www.vdolive.com/

There, if you've got a Windows internet connection, you can download their
Netscape plug-in and check out VDOLive for yourself. (Mac version coming
"real soon.")

2. HOW MANY REPUBLICANS DOES IT TAKE TO SCREW IN A LIGHTBULB?
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:

We know you've been wondering. :-)
How many Republicans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

FOUR HUNDRED AND SIXTY-TWO...
Twelve to investigate Clinton's involvement in the failure of the old bulb,
twenty-three to deregulate the light bulb industry, sixteen to cut funding
for alternative lighting R&D, thirty-four to cut the tax rate on light
bulbs, fifty-three to design a block grant so the states can change the
bulb, forty-one to talk with defense contractors about night-vision gear
instead, and two hundred and eighty-three to pass a law making it illegal
to discuss naked bulbs (or screwing anything) on the Internet.
