Cindy, one of our bigger branch libraries tried interfiling for about 2
years, and although it was nice for reference work (finding all the
upholstery or London travel material in ONE place), it had a devastating
effect on circulation. Of course none of us will admit to worshipping at
the altar of the great god of circ, but it certainly appeared that people
were more interested in format than subject, and suggests that there are
two kinds of library patrons that don't overlap. In spite of this, the
librarian who told me her experience encourages you to at least try it, or
try interfiling certain subjects that you feel would be enhanced by close
proximity.

Another aspect of interfiling is collection development - who then is
responsible for ordering, updating, weeding, etc.? Will this practice make
AV librarians obsolete? Hmmmm....

Good luck!
