Most distributors, even those who only ship proprietary titles, offer some
sort of free shipping option to remain competitive. Usually it's based on a
minimum order or negotiated as part of a contract. While s&h charges may
still represent a profit center for some consumer-directed mail order
companies, the costs of packing and shipping merchandise have risen to the
point of eliminating any potential for profit in that area for most
distributors. In other words, your vendor is not charging you unfairly; in
fact, he's most likely absorbing a loss in shipping. On the other hand,
stiff competition for your a/v dollars has given you the customer more
bargaining leverage and everything is (usually) negotiable.
