Re: Dewey class videos

I was unsure from the original post whether the discussion was about
whether to catalog videos by Dewey or LC, or about classifying at all vs
arranging by title. At Miami-Dade Public Library, we have cataloged by
Dewey for the last 5 years. We also arrange by Dewey (except our public
performance, which are behind the desk, and are arranged by title--
tradition more than reason!
I would definitely recommend classifying (by Dewey or LC) for a public
library. Once the collection gets beyond a few hundred title, patrons who
want to browse by subject/genre resent spending half an hour to find that
you only have ten titles on a subject. Classifying also makes it easier if
a future director decides to interfile videos with books. We separate our
videos, but could interfile the whole collection in a few days, with no
additional cataloging/processing.
