Video security

The discussion today on security cases prompts me to write about how we
have managed to thwart the casual thief: We use a KNOGO pass-around
system (the items are never de-magnetized); like others have stated,
people have learned to just peel off the metal strips, tuck the items
in their pants, and waltz away. Our video clerk (before new tapes go into
the collection) takes the videos apart and inserts a metal strip INSIDE the
cassette, then re-assembles it. (...and we all know which ones to do this
to...) Each tapes takes less than 2 minutes, but the cure is well worth
it - we are no longer the "easy target," and we are very seldom bothered
by hit-and-run thieves any more.
