"It's difficult to know what trumps what here: DMCA sez no breaking of
encryption (xcept for film studies folk, don't get me started
again)...so...Digitizing a clip from a DVD probably goes in the face of
DMCA, even tho TEACH might allow "broadcast" of the clip."--gary

Agreed. But digitizing from a VHS does not involve breaking any encryption. So those tapes could be precious resource for creating clips for online courses!!!

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
