Paramount and 20th Century Fox are starting to release new DVDs in two versions, rental
and retail. The rental version will release on street date with no extras and special features.
The retail version release with the special features will be delayed it looks like anywhere
from 3 to 8 weeks after the street date. In the case of Paramount, the price for the rental
version seems to be about $10 more per dvd.
We don't like either choice. We either have to buy a version with no extras and possibly higher cost, or make our customers wait a significantly longer period of time.
We are wondering what other libraries, particularly public libraries, are going to do.
Until we get direction from management level, we are going to buy retail and see what happens.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
