As a certified film snob, I'd be happy to see 30 copies of TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN available in a dollar vending maching outside the public library if it meant that I might find more films by the likes of Michael Haneke, John Ford and Federico Fellini inside the library for free.

Hello,

I would certainly disagree with Jessica's post, which seems to be a shoot-from-the hip negative reaction without knowledge of the public library market and the dynamics of such a decision.

I applaud libraries like Princeton taking new approaches to these times of difficult funding and just plain taking a chance.  I could see this working.  Supply cheap but not free DVDs of popular videos to the community, and save your resources for other materials.  Libraries cannot satisfy the demand for Spiderman 3 so why not give the job to someone who can?

I will be very interested to hear how you do with this, Barbara.  Bravo for this effort.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
