Limited Copies of Life and Debt Available for Educational Use

Stephen Holden of The New York Times writes, "As Stephanie Black's powerful documentary Life and Debt illustrates with an impressive (and depressing) acuity, globalization can have a devastating impact on third world countries. The movie offers the clearest analysis of globalization and its negative effects that I've ever seen on a movie or television screen."

The award-winning Life and Debt is a feature-length documentary case study which addresses the impact of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and current globalization policies on a developing country such as Jamaica. Utilizing excerpts from "A Small Place" by Jamaica Kincaid, Life and Debt is a woven tapestry of sequences focusing on the stories of individual Jamaicans whose strategies for survival and parameters of day-to-day existence are determined by the U.S. and other foreign economic agendas.

With twenty-five years of "help" from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank intended to bring Third World nations such as Jamaica into the fold of free market economies, these "restructuring" policies have crippled Jamaica's efforts toward self-reliant development while enriching the lenders. This searing f ilm is an unapologetic look at the "new world order" from the point of view of Jamaican workers and farmers, as well as government and policy officials. Life and Debt features interviews with Former Prime Minister Michael Manley, Former Deputy Director of the International Monetary Fund Stanley Fischer, and short commentary by Former President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide and Former President of Ghana Jerry Rawlings. Yet the articulate voices of those impacted by the policies of globalization are featured foremost.
