I had the same experience, trying to communicate with them about getting
a dvd version of that set, too. I don't recall the answer specifically,
but I do remember going ballistic (if only to myself) when I spoke to
them. I suspect my faculty would want a chaptered version on DVD. Makes
you wonder what some distributors are thinking when they finally get the
product together and it isn't at all what the buyer wants.

Subject: [Videolib] DVD source? "JVC Video Anthology of World Music
andDance"

Hello everyone,
Our library has a set of 30 VHS tapes, called the "JVC Video Anthology
of World Music and Dance," from the 1980's. Now our music library
manager is asking whether this set exists on DVD.=20

Yes, it apparently does. In WorldCat I found an entry, with 68 libraries
owning the DVD set. However, I've had no luck finding a place to
purchase the DVDs. WorldCat says they're distributed by Multicultural
Media. The Multicultural Media website directs me to
worldmusicstore.com, where they sell the VHS tapes (a set of 30 for
$1200), but not DVDs. Well, that's not 100% correct. If we wanted to buy
their entire 41-volume "JVC Smithsonian Folkways Complete Collection"
for $1500, we could order it on DVD-Rs. They "cannot accept phone orders
or inquiries," so I sent them a message on 3/20, asking if they could
sell us DVDs of just the 30 volumes we want. They haven't replied.

Does anyone know where those 68 libraries might have bought their DVDs?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
