Anybody else received this message from Swank? Anybody know more about what=
they're proposing?
Like the Copyright Clearance Center, they are providing a service but they =
aren't exactly proponents of Fair Use (note that Swank's FAQ page doesn't n=
ot mention the classroom face-to-face exemption anywhere).
"...I am with Swank Motion Pictures. I have worked with your University fo=
r a number of years to provide public performance licensing for films. Swa=
nk has most recently obtained the rights to provide movies in an on-demand =
environment-more specifically we are now able to license you to stream movi=
es via your online course management system. We have found that the demand=
to view films via course management to support course curriculums has been=
growing quite rapidly and we hope that this new program will be a good sol=
ution for many colleges and universities. We are currently working on a de=
mo of this new product and it should be complete in the coming weeks-I will=
be sure to forward the demo along a that time. In the mean time please do=
not hesitate to contact me with any questions if you feel this new opportu=
nity may be of value to your campus! I would love to discuss how we can ta=
ilor this new product to meet your current and future needs!"
