This three-DVD collection clearly illustrates the major concepts of
cell-signaling mechanisms with excellent animation and concise
narration. This first disk in the series addresses the molecular biology
on the topic, reflected in most introductory college texts. Signal
transduction, receptor molecules, G-protein receptors, transduction,
signal cascades, phosphorylation, and other fundamental concepts are
illustrated, explained, and clearly linked. This DVD alone is worth
having in any introductory college course and will enrich secondary
courses since the material will soon filter down to that level.

The second and third DVDs take the concepts and apply them to plant and
animal cellular communication mechanisms. Animal examples include the
nervous system and endocrine system signaling, including neuron
structure, nerve and nervous system components, synapse and
neurotransmitter function, and endocrine hormone with target cell
descriptions. All of these are illustrated and described in general
terms linked to the molecular level cell signaling terms and concepts
from the first DVD.

The strength of this series lies in the first video. While the
information in the animal DVD can be found elsewhere, when the animal
communication concepts are linked to the molecular and cellular
information of the first, more up-to-date understanding becomes
available. So while the products are valuable in themselves, they work
best in series.

I have never seen a better introductory video. The animation is
admirable and the narration crisp and clear to follow. Online,
downloadable teacher/viewing guides supplement the high-quality
presentations with pre-, during, and post-viewing questions and activity
suggestions. The single weak point I can find is what is lacking from
cell signaling in an increasingly important area, that of biofilm
communication or quorum sensing in bacterial colonies. Although
quasi-multicellular organisms such as slime molds are passingly
mentioned, I think the series would have been more complete if it had
included these areas as well. Perhaps the producers will include them in
a future update. That being said, as it is, these three DVDs are a
welcome addition to classroom coverage on cellular level communication.
