We find it important to distribute our educational titles through various
distributors and jobbers (hard copy resale for classroom use) as many of our
customers have their favorite "go tos" for purchasing. The aggregators of
titles do a good job, generally, and we view working with them as an
important service for our customers. Some of the bigger aggregators,
however, insist on absurd discounts from producers. This way they can sell
to jobbers at a discount and still walk away with something. We just can't
afford to work with these folks.

Broadcast, duplication, digital delivery, distance learning . these kinds of
rights call for different pricing and often include special conditions or
terms of use. Where these kinds of rights are involved, we sell or license
direct or through distributors that specialize in one of these areas.

I did not mean to lump anyone in. It was my understanding that many of the
specialty educational companies like First Run, Women Make
Movies, BullFrog etc would only allow direct sales I sincerely apologize
if I am wrong but I would appreciate some clarification on policies from
any of the above and other specialty distributors. I know some companies
have titles that they may sell retail but other titles they will only sell
direct because of pricing and rights issues ( New Yorker and First Run come
to mind). I am reasonably certain that the majority of what I would call
high end specialty titles
( mostly non fiction) can only be bought directly from the distributor
meaning that even the best connected vendor would not be able to supply
them.

I would like to make a comment about what Jessica Rosner said in her last
posted. She essentially lumped us in with Midwest and B&T, saying that a
service like ours cannot supply educational materials. This is not the
case.

Action! is a DVD jobber. We supply mass market and we also supply titles
from vendors like Bullfrog, Films for the Humanities, and other specialty
vendors who sell directly to the educational marketplace.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
