Subject: [Videonews] *New Release* WHERE STRANGERS BECOME NEIGHBOURS=20

Dear Videonews Subscribers,
=20
Resegregation is a fact of life for most urban and suburban areas. More
than forty years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the demographic
data is consistent: real integration is farther away than ever before,
even in supposedly diverse cities such as New York. =20
=20
However, waves of immigration are creating multicultural communities
that do not fit into the 20th century paradigm. Many of the ethnic
groups that are migrating in large numbers do not fit into categories
such as "Black" or "White." Perhaps the most important part of this
story is how many of these "new" communities are incredibly successful,
from both a social and economic standpoint. WHERE STRANGERS BECOME
NEIGHBOURS is the story of one such community which, over the course of
a generation, transformed from a nearly all-white community -- with
xenophobic tendencies -- to an incredibly diverse community of unlocked
doors, open arms, and true neighbors.=20
=20
Where Strangers Become Neighbours=20
A Film by Giovanni Attili =20

Fear, anxiety, even hostility are typical reactions to immigrants in
this Age of Migration, in the New World as well as in Europe. How do
people develop an everyday capacity to live alongside those perceived as
different, strange?

Our story explores this contemporary global social issue by looking at
one urban neighbourhood. Collingwood, a predominantly white community
until the 1980s, has been transformed by the arrival of large numbers of
Asians, Africans and Latin Americans. =20

Just 20 years ago this community was locking its doors, afraid of
change, and telling immigrants to go back where they came from . Now
it is a welcoming place for everyone. How did this happen? How do
strangers become neighbours?=20
