SHADYA
A Film by Roy Westler

Like many 17-year-old girls, Shadya Zoabi enjoys listening to music and
hanging out with her friends, but she is also a world karate champion, a
feminist in a male-dominated culture, and a Muslim Arab living in
Israel. This moving film tells her story over two years, as transitions
from a teenager to woman, from a daughter to wife, and from one family
to another. Shadya is lucky to have grown up with a supportive father,
but the pressure from her brothers and community is difficult to
overcome. At the same time, she is grappling with the challenges that
Muslims face as citizens of Israel. A universal coming-of-age story,
Shadya is also about a young Muslim woman who wants to succeed on her
own terms while staying committed to life within her community. (2005,
