"Girls Studies" is one of the fastest growing areas of academia, and the
National Film Board of Canada has several titles for this important
subject. Among them is the New Release BECOMING 13 which, using a unique
diary-cam approach, follows three 12 year-olds and their mothers over
the course of a year. See below for links to several online clips.

BECOMING 13
A Film by Victoria King

This smart documentary explores the intimidating terrain of girlhood.
Peer pressure is an important influence on the formation of identity
but, as the film shows, family is the greatest influence. With the
fathers often absent, the mothers are in control, almost single-handedly
shaping the character and determining the future of her young charge.
The filmmaker, herself a mother of a young daughter, treats her subjects
with sensitivity and respect.=20

Expected to achieve nothing less than academic perfection, Avi spends a
lot of time in her room studying, or trying to. In some ways Avi is more
comfortable with the camera and her anonymous audience than with an
invasive mother. Jazmine's Mom is devoted to her happiness, but as a
single parent she struggles with the needs of her other children, trying
to make ends meet. Jane's 12-year-old life is equally involved. Mom is
an artist who seeks to balance her bohemian ethics with more structured
rules - not always an obvious path to follow.=20

Ultimately, the film reveals the complexity of being 12,both satisfying
our curiosity and inviting us to ask: What happens next? (2006, 47 min)
