1. Ring of Fire - An Indonesian Odyssy: 5 Hours on 2 DVDs! This 5 film
series documents
the ten-year voyage of two filmmakers, brothers Lorne and Lawrence Blair,
through the world's largest and
least known archipelago - the exotic, mysterious islands of Indonesia.
Their intimate encounters with the vanishing masters of tribal wisdom
were to lead them from a physical adventure, into a deeper, more
personal quest of self-discovery. Cut from 80 hours of 16mm film in
co-production with WGBH, Boston, RING OF FIRE was produced and written
by Lawrence Blair. Executive producer was Frontline's David Fanning.
Beyond the Ring of Fire was directed by David Fanning.
Films include:
Spice Island Saga; Dance of the Warriors; East of Krakatoa; Dream Wanderers
of Borneo;
Beyond the Ring of Fire
Special features on the DVD include an interactive map and extra pictures
and notes
from the companion book.
2. Which Way is East - Notebooks from Vietnam: When two American sisters
travel
north from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, conversations with Vietnamese
strangers and friends reveal to them the
flip side of a shared history. Lynne and Dana Sachs' travel diary of
their trip to Vietnam is a collection of tourism, city life, culture
clash, and historic inquiry that's put together with the warmth of a
quilt. WHICH WAY IS EAST starts as a road trip and flowers into a
political discourse. It combines Vietnamese parables, history and
memories of the people the sisters met, as well as their own childhood
memories of the war on TV. "To Americans for whom the Vietnam War ended
in 1975, WHICH WAY IS EAST is a reminder that Vietnam is a country, not
a war. The film has a combination of qualities: compassion, acute
observational skills, an understanding of history's scope, and a
critical ability to discern what's missing from the textbooks and TV
news." (Susan Gerhard, The Independent)
3. The Collector - Allan Stone's Life in Art: The Collector explores the
46-year
career of Allan Stone, the famed New York City gallery owner and art
collector. Producer and director
Olympia Stone reveals her father's compulsive collecting genius while
telling the parallel story of his lifelong journey through the art
world from the 1950s to 2006. Viewers are taken on an extraordinary path
inside one man's obsessive submersion in art and its influence on the
artists, art dealers and family members with whom
he worked and lived.
4. Art Showdown: Art Show Down is a frontier-themed art game show shot in
front of a
live studio audience. This wacky pilot DVD includes all seven zany
episodes culminating in the Ultimate Artist Challenge in which one
contestant remains standing after defeating the herd of talented
challengers! Producers Roland Smart and Jeff Warmouth explore highbrow
vs. lowbrow interpretations of contemporary culture in this unique game
show, which exploits the best (and the worst!) of the game show genre
through the lens of the arts.
Contests include The Auction Price is Right, in which contestants
must guess the final selling price of a famous artwork at action, the
Hang 'em High rock climbing gallery wall challenge, a paintball contest
in TheAction Art Shooting Gallery. Schmooze & Booze in which
contestants must eat, drink, and schmooze to curry the favor of a guest
curator, and A Brush with Danger, in which contestants must brand each
other with paint through an action painting, head-thrusting, paintbrush
helmeted, and hands-hog-tied challenge!
