Can anyone comment on the legality of these sorts of things? One needs
approval of the copyright owner to translate a work (and to then
distribute it in this way). Does anyone know if these sites have the
approval of copyright owners for the titles that are represented?

Subject: [Videolib] Downloading subtitles

Back when there was a request on this list for "Citizen under
suspicion" with English subtitles, I started wondering if anyone
downloads their English subtitles and combines them with a non-subtitled
DVD thru a computer player. I see there are several websites devoted to
subtitles; the downloadable text files which I've looked at seem unique,
i.e. several may be listed for one film, but they are not duplicates.
This suggests to me that they are original work being offered without
copyright.
Most computer players let you create a playlist which plays the
DVD and follows the timing on the subtitle file.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
