My library district is similarly sized - 8 branches + bookmobile. I've
created internal guidelines to address TV selection in our library
district - they are listed below, since I don't know if Videolib handles
attachments.

I use these merely as a guideline and as justification if I say no to a
patron request. To be honest, I have overcome some biases concerning our
TV collection. Initially, I saw no reason to have a broad collection of
TV shows - there are so many being released that it can become
overwhelming and some of those 70's & 80's programs are so bad. Once
you've started a series, I you really have no choice but to continue it
through the entire series - and do we really want 9 seasons of Facts of
Life? But after looking at the popularity of the bad movies that we own
(I like to use Larry the Cable Guy, Health Inspector as an example), are
bad TV shows any worse? So I've taken a deep breath and continued to
order TV shows - both new and old - for our library district. I try to
meet our hold list ratio guidelines for new series - HBO & Showtime
series are very popular, as are shows like 24 & Lost. I normally only
order two copies of older series (normally driven by patron requests),
possibly adding a few more copies if hold lists become large.

TV guidelines:

=20

The growing quantity of available new & re-released television program
titles becoming available on DVD, as well as the cost of these
multi-volume, multi-disc sets, requires that the Arapahoe Library
District be selective in the ordering of TV programs in order to create
a well-rounded TV program collection without affecting other areas of
the video collection.

=20

The following criteria will be used for the selection and purchase of
popular television programming. It is not intended to cover
"educational" or "documentary" programs from sources such as PBS or the
History Channel:

=20

1. The purchase of new sequential seasons of TV programs currently
in the ALD catalog will continue. Quantities purchased and branch
location of new season programs will be identical to that of previous
seasons.
2. Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA (British) award winning programs
will be added to the collection when available on DVD.
3. Top rated programs (Nielsen Ratings, People's Choice Award) will
be strongly considered for addition.
4. Emmy & Golden Globe outstanding program nominees will be
strongly considered for addition.
5. Reissue of award-winning or "classic" TV series will be strongly
considered for addition.
6. Other television series will be considered based on a variety of
criteria including

a. Number of patron requests (at least 3)
b. Critical reviews from various sources including Video
Librarian & metacritic.com
c. Nielsen Ratings
d. Cost of DVD set

Note: If an item in this section is selected, only one or two copies
will be purchased.

7. The following program types will normally not be considered for
addition to the collection:

a. Reality Programs
b. Talk Shows
c. Sport Programs
d. Game Shows=20
e. Made-for-TV Movies.

8. "Popular" non-fiction TV programs (HGTV, Food Network,
Discovery) will be considered as part of the overall non-fiction video
collection, but all series will not normally be purchased.
9. Children's programming will be considered on a case-by-case
basis, however, most children's commercial cartoon series will not be
considered for addition.

Subject: [Videolib] Audio Visual selection policies

=20

Hello:

=20

We are a medium to large public library - 5 branches plus a bookmobile
- in a city of 105,000. We are currently revising our Audio Visual
Selection policy with emphasis on selection of DVD and Video. The
problem we are experiencing is an increase in patron suggestions for
purchase of TV series, i.e. The OC, 24, etc. I would be interested in
how your library handles this. Do you purchase TV series? Do you have
something written in your selection policy to address this problem?

=20

Thank you.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
