The shows on the pay channels are the very ones I'm inclined to purchase
because people have less access to them. It's true that many of them
would be rated R, however we purchase films for all ages so that isn't a
problem here.

=20

At this point, we are purchasing many tv series and many of them are as
high quality as good films, but it is harder to get reviews and evaluate
them. Our policy states that we will purchase a selection of the best
of everything we buy: the best foreign films, best local, best
independent, best popular (which is a thorny one - this means we don't
purchase universally panned popular) and best tv series. We rely on
reviews from Entertainment Weekly, metacritic.com, the newspaper, Emmy
awards, etc. to determine "best." With tv series we are purchasing most
of what the public asks for unless the reviews are poor. If it seems
marginal we don't purchase many copies (we have an 18 branch system). =20

=20

We also package series in sets of two, which hold up a lot better than a
big case with lots of dvds flopping around in it. (So we will circ,
Season 1, Discs 1-2 in one case). =20

=20

It is hard writing a standard for television because what is available
is so broad and often marginal, but I'd try, because there is also a lot
of great stuff on tv that would enhance your collection. Good luck.

Cathy,

=20

The only TV series we do not purchase for our 8-branch public system are
things like the Sopranos which are on pay channels like HBO and Cinemax
and Showtime. Our collection development policy does not allow rated R
movies, and some of those series would definitely fall into that
category. We are discussing revising the policy to exclude TV-MA as
well.

=20

A word of advice on processing them, though. We have gone to using the
cases we use for our books on CD for anything with more than 3 discs
because we have not found any cases that hold more than 2 discs that
handle heavy circulation. Those cases made for 4 or more discs are
junk.

=20

We also have the ongoing debate as to whether or not the season should
be split into separate discs or cataloged as 1 item.

Hello:

=20

We are a medium to large public library - 5 branches plus a bookmobile
- in a city of 105,000. We are currently revising our Audio Visual
Selection policy with emphasis on selection of DVD and Video. The
problem we are experiencing is an increase in patron suggestions for
purchase of TV series, i.e. The OC, 24, etc. I would be interested in
how your library handles this. Do you purchase TV series? Do you have
something written in your selection policy to address this problem?

=20

Thank you.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
