Hi All,
I know we've just discussed DVD repair machine options a few weeks ago,
but I was unable to find these discussions in the archives. And as it
always happens just when you think won't be needing something (like
those past articles) you are suddenly asked about them.
Anyway, we are now considering the pros & cons of purchasing a repair
machine. I have James Scholtz's article from May 2004, LJ, but was
wondering if any "new developments" have ....uhh...developed, or are the
machines basically the same as they were 3 years ago.
We are a small-medium sized library. Currently we have a SkipDr to
handle minor scratches, but it tends to leave the discs with radial
marks, and in my opinion don't do that great of a job. We "send out"
our DVDs with more significant scratches, but none of our CDs.
Thanks for any info.

Hi Wendy et. al.:
I'm also at a small/medium public library.
Two years ago we purchased a VenMill 3500 buffing unit. It was not
inexpensive (about $1800 through Baker & Taylor) but has more than paid
for itself. It does a great job cleaning and repairing all of our DVDs
and CDs. It uses a different process than many other machines, in that
it does not strip off the top layer but rather fills in the scratches.
I'm not a techy, so will not try to go into further detail and get it
wrong.
One of the many selling points for us on this machine is the ease of
use. There is no water to add; nothing to clean... it is practically a
one-button process with no mess. We are extremely pleased with this
unit.

Collections, are being deployed concurrently. These are /different
surveys/ and can both be completed by the same respondents. -- MM]
Greetings,
You are being invited to voluntarily participate in an anonymous survey
conducted through ALA's Video Round Table [VRT] on video librarians,
their work and educational and experiental backgrounds. The purpose of
the study is to collect, and then analyze and summarize this
information. Our hope is that a better understanding in the field of who
video librarians are, the work that they do, and how they came to be
video librarians could result in a more cohesive and active community of
library professionals and could also help to attract potential video
librarians to the field. You are eligible to participate in this survey
if you consider yourself a video librarian, and are currently working in
a library, museum or archive with video materials (DVD, VHS, digital
formats, etc.). If you agree to participate, your participation will
involve completing an online survey on you, your work and your academic
and experiental background. The survey should take no longer than 10
minutes. You may take the survey at any time prior to May 2, 2007.
The analyzed, anonymous results will be shared with the field through
the VideoLib listserv and VRT.
In order to maintain your confidentiality, your name and email address
will not be revealed in any reports that result from this project or
known to anyone other than the primary investigator.
You can access the survey here:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=429012469371
If you would like to view the questions that will be in the survey
before you begin, please view the following webpage:

rvey.htm
You can obtain further information from the principal investigator,
(Michael Brewer, MA, MLIS), at (520) 307-2771 or
brewerm@u.library.arizona.edu

Your participation would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Meghann Matwichuk and Michael Brewer (for ALA's Video Round Table)
