We are about to start lending Playaways, so the feedback I have read has
been very interesting. Prior to ordering ours I contacted a few
libraries that were already circulating them. One of them reported the
same problem that John mentioned and said they determined it was caused
by bookmarks that previous users had placed. However, according to the
directions this should be easily resolved by using the skip back or skip
ahead buttons, which John said they have tried, so perhaps this is a
different issue.

We have about 50 titles on Playaways, with multiple copies here at the
central library and also some distribution throughout the system. They
have been popular enough to warrent buying more, but they haven't killed
the demand for CDs or cassettes (we also have downloadable audiobooks at
our website). We issue a fresh battery with each at checkout, but ask if
the patron needs headphones - if they already have headphones of their
own, we encourage them to use them but will provide a new set if they
want.
There may be a problem with the players themselves however - I have
heard numerous complaints (including from patrons who I know are
techno-saavy) that sometimes the player won't go beyond a certain point
in the book, or else won't start at the beginning, and this after
following all of the instructions that are printed inside the case.
Until someone invents an inspection machine for these, or someone on
staff has the time to sit down and listen to an entire book, we have to
take their word for it.

I know that this is a video format list, but as many of us are involved
with multiple non-print formats, I thought I'd ask my question here, as
I'd probably get more response than if I posted to Autocat.

We just bought some Playaway digital audio books to try out for
circulation. Have any of you started circulating these or similar
self-contained audio books with players? If so, what type of response
have you gotten from patrons and/or staff? From a cataloging
perspective I don't think it will be much different, but we'd appreciate
any feedback given.

Thanks,

Amanda Ros

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
