Amanda & others:

We began adding Playaway about six months ago, and I admit to initially
being skeptical of their usefulness.they seemed (to me) better suited to
retail than public libraries. Well, I was 100 percent wrong! We started
the collection relatively small (50 titles, 100 copies, in one branch) and
have since doubled it. At any given time, approximately 2/3 of the
collection is checked out; our customers love them. Prominent display space
and promotion has been the key to their success. We do not circulate the
extra battery, though we will replace it for the customer upon request.
Similarly with headphones.we purchased a case of cheap headphones and
distribute them as customers request them.

Subject: [Videolib] Not sure if this is the right place

I know that this is a video format list, but as many of us are involved with
multiple non-print formats, I thought I'd ask my question here, as I'd
probably get more response than if I posted to Autocat.

We just bought some Playaway digital audio books to try out for circulation.
Have any of you started circulating these or similar self-contained audio
books with players? If so, what type of response have you gotten from
patrons and/or staff? From a cataloging perspective I don't think it will
be much different, but we'd appreciate any feedback given.

Thanks,

Amanda Ros

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
