Hello Tracy,

Our policies are as follows:

1. Loan of 5 DVDs per library card (maximum 5 out at any one time),
inclusive of all categories (adult, youth).

2. Loan period is 7 days, with one renewal allowed if the item has not been
reserved. No distinction between FIC/NON-FIC, ADULT/JUV.

3. Box sets of more than two discs are divided up so that each disc
circulates separately. All remain a 7 day loan.

4. We just purchased new Kwik cases, and they seem sturdy enough, although
as mentioned in a previous response, they are impossible to keep standing
straight up. Due to their design, they are unbalanced and will not stack.
Therefore, they need to be stood up individually, and can easily fall via a
domino effect. Not the best for display.... We have just begun to use them,
so I cannot tell you how effective they are, and whether or not theft will
be an issue.

Subject: [Videolib] DVD circulation policies - public libraries

Hello all!

We've had circulating DVDs in our collection for 6 or 7 years now, and we
are evaluating our current circulation policies. To get an idea of the
trends within public libraries, I would appreciate you taking the time to
please let me know your current policies and practices. Thank you in
advance!

Your Library system:

How many DVDs do you allow per patron check-out?

How long do your DVDs circulate? In regard to circulation time, do you
distinguish between fiction and nonfiction, adult and juvenile?

How do you handle your boxed DVD sets? Do they have a longer circulation
period? Do you keep in one package or separate the discs?

How do you secure your DVDs?

Do you use a security case or lock?

If so, what is the name of the product?

Are you satisfied with the product? Why or why not?

Thank you again for your time. It is appreciated.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
