In Canada, we can lease copies of "feature film" videos from the
distributors with the PPR. When the lease runs out, we must return the
video to the distributor.
Usually the lease runs from 3 - 5 years. A few years ago the
prices for a medium-sized institution were something like:
$90 for a single performance
$300 for a 3 - 5 year lease + loan of an
authorized copy
Obviously it was more economical to lease those videos which fit
the curriculum.
Now, we just buy blanket licenses from the two main distributors,
and get our commercial copies elsewhere (eg. the corner store, etc.)

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
