Hi,
I'm responding to Tracy's inquiry about MP3 audios. First, let me
say that this, like other "new" av formats has a number of options
and at least as many ways of handling those options. I think that the
MP3 audios you are referring to are the ones that look very much
like audiobooks on CD. In fact the only way you can distinguish them
is by wherever they have labeled it "MP3_CD". This was one of the
first iterations I heard about for bringing the MP3 format into
audiobook collections. The main drawback to them, is that they can
only be played on players that are MP3-CD compatible -- which
excludes most car stereo systems and older CD players that people
have at home/exercise with. This disadvantage, along with the fact
that both patrons and staff are likely to miss whether a particular
audiobook CD is an MP3-CD or a regular audiobook on CD made MP3-CDs
somewhat unappealing.

Almost on the heels of this, I learned about new downloadable books
in the MP3 format that are downloaded onto MP3 players. iPod users
and others started using these to buy audiobook downloads. As
libraries, we started looking into how we could provide access to
downloadable audiobooks. The two methods that libraries around here
are using are: audiobooks that the library downloads onto
library-owned players or downloadable audiobook websites that the
library contracts the licensing fee with to allow patrons to download
audiobooks to their own players. Complicating things further, is the
fact that the major audiobook publishers use .wma files that are not
compatible with iPods. This meant, in our case, that if the library
wanted to offer the second option (where patrons download for
themselves to an MP3 player) we would also need to have some MP3
players available to borrow. We got 5 Creative Zen 1GB MP3 players
for this purpose. That was both patrons who have yet to get an MP3
player, and those who have iPods could still use our downloadable service.

These vendors are constantly adding new content and new contract
options for library customers. My feeling is that they have taken
over the market from the MP3-CD producers, although I know there's
probably a user base who likes the fact that they are so similar to
the audiobook CDs they already take out, that they won't mind getting
a player that can play MP3CDs. I still tend to think that these users
would be better served by (initially) using the service where library
staff downloads to an MP3 player for them, and they learn how to use
these fairly simple players.

I know I've rattled on here, but hopefull there's helpful info in here!

Hi,
I'm responding to Tracy's inquiry about MP3 audios.  First, let me say that this, like other "new" av formats has a number of options and at least as many ways of handling those options. I think that the MP3 audios you are referring to are the ones that look very much like audiobooks on CD. In fact the only way you can distinguish them is by wherever they have labeled it "MP3_CD". This was one of the first iterations I heard about for bringing the MP3 format into audiobook collections. The main drawback to them, is that they can only be played on players that are MP3-CD compatible -- which excludes most car stereo systems and older CD players that people have at home/exercise with. This disadvantage, along with the fact that both patrons and staff are likely to miss whether a particular audiobook CD is an MP3-CD or a regular audiobook on CD made MP3-CDs somewhat unappealing.

Almost on the heels of this, I learned about new downloadable books in the MP3 format that are downloaded onto MP3 players. iPod users and others started using these to buy audiobook downloads. As libraries, we started looking into how we could provide access to downloadable audiobooks.  The two methods that libraries around here are using are: audiobooks that the library downloads onto library-owned players or downloadable audiobook websites that the library contracts the licensing fee with to allow patrons to download audiobooks to their own players. Complicating things further, is the fact that the major audiobook publishers use .wma files that are not compatible with iPods. This meant, in our case, that if the library wanted to offer the second option (where patrons download for themselves to an MP3 player) we would also need to have some MP3 players available to borrow. We got 5 Creative Zen 1GB MP3 players for this purpose. That was both patrons who have yet to get an MP3 player, and those who have iPods could still use our downloadable service.

These vendors are constantly adding new content and new contract options for library customers. My feeling is that they have taken over the market from the MP3-CD producers, although I know there's probably a user base who likes the fact that they are so similar to the audiobook CDs they already take out, that they won't mind getting a player that can play MP3CDs. I still tend to think that these users would be better served by (initially) using the service where library staff downloads to an MP3 player for them, and they learn how to use these fairly simple players.

I know I've rattled on here, but hopefull there's helpful info in here!

Dear Linda,
This series aired on PBS in Feb./March, 1980. It was produced by =3D
Christopher Ralling and starred Malcolm Stoddard and released by =3D
BBC/Time-Life Television in VHS video format. The ISN number is =3D
0467-58660, and it has the OCLC catalog number 68991532. You could try =3D
doing an interlibrary loan request to one of the 24 institutions holding =3D
video copies, but I believe it's out of print now and has been for some =3D
time.
Best,
Patty

As we all lament the loss of LAVA, I am looking for assistance location
two Argentine films.  Both of these films are within many of your
collections.  I would prefer a US distributor, but may have to order
this from over an international distributor.

1.  Los Inundados <Flooded>, 1961, Fernando Birri.

2.  La Hora de los Hornos <Hour of the Furnaces>, 1968, Getino and Solanas

Thank you for any assistance and hope to see many of you soon!

Subject: [Videolib] CDL dvds

Hello, all.  We have had some requests for commercial drivers license
instructional dvds.  The only title I can find is from 2003 on video -
Pass the CDL Exam.  Does anyone know if there is anything else out there
on DVD, that doesn't also cost an arm and a leg?  I think I asked about
this once before, but maybe there is something out there now that
wasn't.  Thanks a lot.

Hi all !
=3D20
Since many of us also work with audio, I hope that this inquiry is =3D
appropriate. =3D20
=3D20
Have any of your libraries collected MP3 audio discs?  If yes, why?  If =3D
no, why not? =3D20
=3D20
If yes, are they popular with your users?  Which vendor(s) do you use? =3D20

Thank you in advance for the information!
