Tracy,
We began an MP3 disc audiobook collection this fall. The AV department got a donation from the Friends of the Library that was used for seed money. Various people at the library had discussed adding MP3s for over a year and it was finally decided with the extra money to try it.
They have proven to be very popular, about 2/3 of the collection is currently checked out. They are especially popular with younger borrowers (late teens, 20's, 30's.)
So far the audiobook buyer has used BBC, Brilliance, and Blackstone. We have packaged the MP3s in lockable DVD cases--that works really well--clearly marked as MP3s.

Hi all !

Since many of us also work with audio, I hope that this inquiry is appropriate.

Have any of your libraries collected MP3 audio discs? If yes, why? If no, why not?

If yes, are they popular with your users? Which vendor(s) do you use?

Thank you in advance for the information!
Tracy

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
