I am actually very worried that in a few years all the public libraries will have withdrawn their entire VHS collections and it will be nearly impossible to obtain films that never made it to DVD.

Our library still circulates "dead" formats like laserdisc and 16mm films on campus....and we have had problems with ILL DVDs and DVD-Rs so many of our librarians are still currently purchasing VHS--especially when the DVD offers no additional content.

Nearly every week I talk to someone that is "amazed" to find out that a particular tv show/movie/feature film has never been released on DVD, but was released on VHS and is now out of print.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
