We only clean ours when there is a complaint. While I would like to
have a cleaning machine, we don't have one right now. We just use the
same spray cleaner that we use to clean cds - available in all cd
stores. And for the most part, that has taken care of probably 95% of
the reported problems. Most of our problems with dvds are reports that
the disc won't even load into the player. We clean them, then play
them. Most of the time, they play fine. =20

Hi All,

We're completing our first major DVD inventory after
having them in the open stacks for one year. Does anyone have any tips
or guidelines on how to gauge DVD damage? Some DVDs look pretty beat up,
but play fine. Does anyone have a regimen of cleaning DVDs? If so,
which department handles this Access Services or Technical Services?
What particular DVD cleaning products have worked well for you?

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
