Former West Virginia Gardener Hosts TV Series
Rebecca Frischkorn once lived in Charleston, becoming a well-known local
garden expert. Several years ago she moved to Charlottesville where she
began working on a four part TV series on gardening called "Garden
Story." She worked with Professor Reuben Rainey of UVA's Dept. of
Landscape Architecture and film director/producer Bill Reifenberger,
best known for "Tuskegee Airmen." Together they made a four-part series
- "Garden as Muse," Garden as Classroom," Garden as Realm of Artistic
Creativity" and "The Garden as Environmental Stewardship."
The last episode was filmed at Upper Shavers Fork in Randolph County. It
shows how various groups and activists are working to preserve the rare
plants and animals in the area. Some of the locals include Ruth
Blackwell Rogers, biologist Rodney Bartgis, director of the WV chapter
of the Nature Conservancy, Charleston photographer Steve Payne and
Charleston landscape painter Susan Poffenbarger. It shows that the
definition of "garden" can be expanded to include a nature preserve.
