At American University, we have a standard two-day checkout extendable =
to
seven days if a reasonable rationale is given, such as use in consecuti=
ve
classes, previewing time, infrequent trips to campus (for adjuncts). We=
have a pretty big collection but we still have logjams for individual
titles when they are being used by various sections of the same course =
(a
la college writing). So we don't want to be too liberal about it.
Exceptions are made for unusual cases. For instance, a faculty member i=
s
currently borrowing several videos for the entire summer to work on a b=
ook,
but there were no reservations on any them and if one is made, he will
return the video.
In terms of the number, the more you check out the more time they will =
need
to view them - a catch 22, if one is considering the best interests of=
all
users. We limit the number to three but make exceptions for reasonable
explanations, such as intensive weekend courses that use numerous clips=
in
a six-hour period. I also prefer that staff remind borrowers of numerou=
s
titles to note the cost of replacing them should they all disappear, me=
lt
in a hot car, etc. With business videos, a handful of videos could easi=
ly
cost a few thousand to replace.
Interestingly but not shocking is that the same people who complain abo=
ut
videos not being here when they drop in without a reservation (about ha=
lf
of our faculty users) are often among the group who want extended loans=
.

Subject: Circulation of AV materials to faculty
Dear colleagues,
I am new to this list. I know there was a discussion about this subject=
sometime ago. Since I need documentation to present to the library
administration, would you please post your ideas again about the check =
out
duration of audiovisual materials to the faculty in your institution? W=
e
have been checking out these materials to the faculty for a whole semes=
ter
and we are faced with many items not returned. I need some information =
on
how long do you let your faculty to keep AV materials, how many items d=
o
you let them to check out and if you have any enforcement policy to cha=
rge
them if the items are not returned. Thank you for your help.
